I am sharing this information for anyone who may need it and is coming from Hanoi to Lao Caí and onwards to Sa’Pa. You’ll be approached by many taxi drivers as soon as you get off of the train. I personally went to the official tourist info desk, located inside the station, and paid 55k dong for a bus ticket; this worked for me as a solo traveller. This was essentially sharing a transit with others (up to approximately 13 or so people). We ended up waiting for more people, so that the transit was full, but this was only 30 minutes. I read there are buses outside but the information on ticket purchases were unclear and it wasn’t clear where to go. This method worked for me, but there may be better methods out there. I know some hotels arrange pick up, and hosts will generally be able to guide you on the best prices.
